Risk Reduction Program (DUI)

Most drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs have serious addiction problems, which requires more than stiff penalties.  Extensive research has shown that the solution to combating this problem is a combination of legal, educational and structured intervention programs.

Project ADAM's Risk Reduction program is the result of a coalition of law enforcement officials, alcohol and drug abuse experts, legislators and community leaders joining together to prevent recurrent incidents of driving under the influence.  The objective of the Risk Reduction program is to identify persons who abuse alcohol and drugs and effectively intervene in order to make our roads safer for citizens of Georgia.

The Risk Reduction Program is made up of two important parts:

  1. An assessment to determine the severity of the DUI offender’s alcohol or drug dependency
  2. A 20-hour intensive group intervention program for offenders

In July 2008, the state of Georgia enacted a law requiring all individuals charged with a DUI to obtain a substance abuse clinical evaluation and, if necessary, complete a treatment program.  The minimum treatment period is 120 days and the maximum period is one year, the length of treatment is to be determined by the treatment provider.  Project ADAM is approved by the state to provide clinical evaluations and treatment to DUI offenders.
