On September 16, 2004, 19-year-old Kyle Hamrick hit what’s commonly known as rock bottom. After staying awake for more than 384 hours and losing 25 pounds on a methamphetamine spree, Hamrick telephoned his mother for help.
“I heard that meth was a way to keep you up at night, and I had a third shift job,” he said. “I thought I would be more productive. One thing led to another and I moved out of my grandma’s house and went on the streets. I would go on month-long sprees with no contact with my family. Then, I hit rock bottom. I was out of money. My truck was messed up and I was living in my truck.”

Project ADAM celebrates 25 years of serving the area community

In the last 25 years, Project ADAM has assisted countless individuals throughout Georgia in overcoming addictions to drug and alcohol.
What today is a multi-function program that provides services such as workplace drug testing, a driver’s improvement clinic and a Christian-based 34-bed, level III.1 treatment facility, all started with a group of local ministers coming together to address the county’s problems with drugs and alcohol in 1980.

More than two decades ago, a group of ministers founded Project ADAM as a response to the growing alcohol and drug abuse epidemic sweeping across the nation.
Through the years, Project ADAM has grown exponentially from offering basic alcohol and drug abuse treatment referrals to offering a variety of services from alcohol and drug abuse treatment to anger management and family domestic violence intervention.

Since its inception in 1980, one thing has remained constant at Project ADAM—its commitment to increase services to meet the evolving needs of the community.
Through the years, Project ADAM has grown exponentially in an attempt to do just that, transforming from a basic alcohol and drug abuse treatment referral center to a comprehensive alcohol and drug treatment and education center.

For years, teenagers have faced pressure to use drugs and alcohol, and studies reveal that those pressures have not subsided in recent years.
In fact, studies show that substance abuse among teenagers continues to be an epidemic in classrooms across the county. According to Brandeis University’s 2001 report entitled Substance Abuse: The Nation’s Number One Health Problem, by the eighth grade, 52 percent of teens have consumed alcohol, while 20 percent have smoked marijuana. In addition, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, 48.2 percent of seniors indicated that they had used illicit drugs in their lifetime. In recent years, incidents of binge drinking (defined as having five or more drinks at one sitting) and the abuse of prescription drugs have soared among teenagers, according to the American Medical Association.
